Fair People's Choice Award Winner

People's Choice Winning Photo

The 2011 Juniata County Fair People's Choice award winner was Daisy Sweigart of Millerstown. She received the most votes for her photograph titled "Pappy's Memories". Her Pappy is shown pointing to his buddy's name on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall.

Teresa O'Neal supported the arts
through her purchase at the fair.

Commissioner Teresa O'Neal purchased two photographs from the 2011 Juniata County Fair Art Show that had sentimental value to her. Judy Mummau's photograph (L) focuses on the Juniata County Courthouse. Joyce Esh's photograph (R) shows a winter landscape of Ebenezer Church were O'Neal attended as a youth.

Businesses and individuals were encouraged to purchase art work from the fair and will be welcome to do so again next year.

$480 raised from Planter Palooza for Library

The 2011 Mifflintown Planter Palooza came to an end today at the Juniata County Fair. The 18 hand painted planters were auctioned at 3:00pm. $480 was raised for the Juniata County Library.

Thank you again to all the artists, businesses, buyers, and the community that made the entire Planter Palooza a success.

Big Tree Festival

The Juniata Cultural Arts Committee again helped to fund the Big Tree Festival in Arch Rock, Sunday, September 4 11am-11pm. Although the time was shortened due to rain, a large group of people attended the festival that included bands on two stages, artists, children's activities, and more!

2011 Juniata County Fair ART SHOW

The Juniata County Fair Art Show is under way in Port Royal. Over 400 pieces have been entered in the art show that runs until Sunday, September 11, 2011. The JCAC facilitated the successful show again this year.

2011 Best of Show Winners:

The photography Best of Show was awarded to Linda Geissinger, Mifflintown. She is pictured with photography judge Sarah Book. Linda's photography titled "Mother and Daddy's Hands" is a sephia photo showing her 90 and 91 year old parent's hands resting on a Bible.

The art Best of Show ribbon was awarded to Carol Gehr, McAlisterville by art judge Sharon Jenne. Carol's mixed media titled "Wake Up" consists entirely of paper. The only paint she used was to dot white snow on the tree branches.

Professional Showcase Best of Category Winner:
Dwight Kirkland pictured with Art Judge: Sharon Jenne. This is one painting in a series of paintings Dwight is creating about interesting people from Lewistown. The painting is of Jim Tunnal, Director of the Chamber of Commerce Visitors Bureau in Lewistown. The background is a train car located in Lewistown.

Juniata County Fair Art Show

The JCAC reminds everyone to enter their artwork and photography on Thursday, September 1, 3-8:00pm at the Juniata County Fair. The fair is open September 3 - 10. Artwork and photography will be judged on Friday evening, September 2, 6:30pm. Their will be a critique time after the judging.

Drawing Together the Community
and Businesses Through the Arts.

2011 Mifflintown Planter Palooza has begun! Check out the 17 planters painted by local artists and craft persons. They are on display along the sidewalks of Mifflintown, PA. This event was sponsored by the Juniata Cultural Arts Committee (JCAC) and Hunters Run Nursery, Port Royal.

On June 3rd, the JCAC along with Maggie Shafferman of Hunters Run Nursery, planted and delivered 17 planters to the sidewalks of downtown Mifflintown. The planters will be on display until September 1. They will then be moved to the Juniata County Fair, Port Royal. The planters will be auctioned at the fair on Saturday, September 10. Proceeds will benefit the Juniata County Library.

Mifflintown is adorned with the beautiful planters created by talented artists and craft persons.

All of the following artists and craft persons were awarded with the honor of having their artwork selected by the JCAC for the 2011 Planter Palooza. Top honors were given to:

The JCAC gathered on Friday, June 3rd to plant and deliver the beautiful painted planters to the sidewalks of Mifflintown.

After the planters were returned to Hunters Run Nursery, they were sealed for outdoor protection. After they dried, the JCAC met to fill the planters with plants that complimented each painted planter. Hunters Run Nursery had a great selection of plants to choose from. The planters will look even more gorgeous as the plants grow.

Thank you to all the artists and craft persons who entered our first Planter Palooza event to be held this summer in Mifflintown, PA.

The winners have been notified and are in the process of picking up their planters this week from Hunters Run Nursery, Port Royal. James Gichner is shown picking up his planter Wednesday morning. The title of his planter design will be "Big and Little Birds". Planters will be returned to Hunters Run and the JCAC by May 31.

Planter Palooza!!

The Juniata Cultural Arts Committee (JCAC), together with Hunters Run Nursery, presents the first Planter Palooza event for Mifflintown, Juniata County. Artists and crafts persons may submit drawings and twenty will be selected to decorate flower planters that will adorn the sidewalks of Mifflintown from June to September. This event is open to the public, and you may receive an entry application at the JCAC website. The goal of the Planter Palooza is to draw together the community and businesses through the arts.

The Juniata Cultural Arts Committee (JCAC) generously paid for the renovations to the walls, display cases, and free-standing walls in the art area of the Juniata County Fair Floral Hall. It was our goal to help improve the art area to fulfill our mission statement of “giving local artists and crafts persons an opportunity to perform and exhibit their talents.”

The JCAC is constantly looking for new ideas to better serve local artists and craft persons. Entry Day at Fair Art Show

On one of the hottest days of the summer, the JCAC helped enter artwork and photography from 3:00-8:00pm Thursday, September 2. The JCAC provided supper for the exhausted helpers. We then hung each of the 282 entries. Thanks to the new slat walls and team work, we were finished hanging the work in a record time - by 9:30!!

Renovations Nearly Complete

Cleaning and set up in the art show area of the Juniata County Fair Floral Hall took place on August 23 by the Juniata Cultural Arts Committee. The free-standing wall units were heavier than we thought they would be! We were all amazed at the results by contractor, Bob Lehman.

JCAC member Judy Mummau facilitated work between the committee and contractor, Bob Lehman of McAlisterville. Work began on August 13 and finished within two weeks. Seven new display cases were ordered and amazing slat wall replaced the old beg board! New free-standing walls were also created on location by Lehman.

2nd Annual Save Thanksgiving Food Pantry Benefit Concert

We're trying to raise money/supplies for the food pantry! They've just relocated and need help filling their shelves. This is the time of year when demand is high--so what a great time to celebrate with local art and music! Festivities are brought to you by Big Tree with the Juniata Cultural Arts Committee.

Admission: a donation of any food, personal care item, household cleaning products, pet food, and/or cash. Featuring: Blue Heron, The Heggs, Appalachian Translator, The Click Clack Boom, Rotten Belly Blues, and Erica Shellenberger...and more! Friday, November 20th at the EMS building in Mifflintown, 6pm-11pm. Tell your friends!! The more the merrier!

Gift Baskets for Juniata Co. Library Benefit Auction

Basket Auction: Saturday, October 3, 6-9pm at Mifflintown Firehall.

Seven tickets cost $5.00. Bidders drop tickets into the container in front of the desired basket. At 8:45pm, winning tickets will be pulled.

Food, drinks, and baked good also available. Toodles the Clown will be on hand to preform and paint the faces of children. Vendors will display information and products.

The next gathering of the Juniata Cultural Arts Committee will be a picnic on Monday, September 21, 6:30pm at Karen Sigler's home. Location: 9 Sycamore Drive, Pennwood Development, Mifflintown. For directions contact Karen at 436-9167 or e-mail: siglerpr@sunlink.net. Drink and meat provided for the meal. If you can, bring a dish to share.

There will not be a meeting on Monday September 7.
Our next meeting will be Monday, October 5, 6:30pm at the Juniata County Library meeting room.

The Juniata County Fair Art Show will begin accepting art and photography entries on Thursday, Sept. 3rd. 3-8:00pm. Judging is Sept 4, 7:30pm.

With the uncertainty of state funding, premiums may be cut or reduced this year. Thankfully our Juniata Cultural Arts Committee plans to award the monetary difference lost by state funding, up to 50 percent of the premium amount listed in the fair book! We will give these amounts to award recipients in Department 19, Sections 1A and 1B. To enter artwork or photography in the Juniata County Fair Art Show, go to www.juniatacountyfair.com.

This year, I'm happy to say, three local businesses will be contacted to purchase artwork for sale at the fair!

Hello! This is our first ever blog for the Juniata Cultural Arts Committee...BUT NOT THE LAST! Currently our website is www.juniataculturalarts.com but we will probably need to change that in the near future. A blog seems to be an easier way for everyone to communicate for right now, so blog it shall be!
We meet at 6:30pm the first Monday of every month in the community room at the Juniata County Library. There is no membership fee, anyone in the community is more than welcome to come and see what we're all about. We would love input on how we can bring the arts and promote local artists in the Juniata County area.
We may be rural, but our minds are as open as our green fields. If you have any questions regarding the committee, please feel free to contact the Juniata Library at 436-6378 and ask for Tessa, or email tessabobessa@gmail.com.
